BYM DEMANDS HALT TO GRAZING ACTIVITIES AFTER MORE THAN 50 FARMLANDS DESTRUCTION IN JOL COMMUNITY OF RIYOM LGA

The Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), under the leadership of Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, expresses deep outrage and condemnation over the calculated and complete destruction of over 100 irrigation farmlands within two days (21st and 22nd April, 2026) in Jol Community, Riyom Local Government Area, which occurred between Tuesday and Wednesday.
Reports from the community confirm that over 50 hectares of cultivated irrigation farmland—hosting a variety of thriving crops—were intentionally invaded and grazed upon by Fulani herders who drove their cattle into these farms. This act has not only destroyed the primary source of livelihood for many families but also threatens food security and economic stability in that general area.
While we acknowledge and appreciate the efforts of the Special Task Force (STF) in arresting 21 cows that returned to the area on Wednesday, we must state that arrest alone does not address the magnitude of destruction inflicted on the farming community. The seized cattle represent only a fraction of those involved and cannot compensate for even half of the losses suffered by the affected farmers.
In light of this, the BYM makes the following demands:

  1. Immediate issuance of a directive or order halting grazing in Jol and its surrounding communities, including Kwi, Wereng, Rim, among others.
  2. Full compensation for all affected farmers whose crops and livelihoods have been destroyed.
  3. Enhanced security presence and enforcement measures to prevent a recurrence of such acts.
  4. We must clearly state that continued inaction or failure to decisively address this issue may further escalate tensions. The community’s patience is being severely tested, and while we advocate for lawful and peaceful resolution, we cannot guarantee sustained calm if these injustices persist unchecked.
The BYM stands firmly with the people of Jol and calls on all relevant authorities to act swiftly and decisively in the interest of justice, peace, and coexistence.
